Recommended Grade Level:9-11
Course Description:
Learning a new language and culture is very exciting. Many people in San Antonio speak Spanish. Students enrolled in Spanish classes will be able to understand basic conversations by the time they are done with their Spanish courses.
Topics Covered:
Spanish 1 covers the basics:
Greetings
Introducing oneself and saying where they are from.
Exchanging phone numbers
Days and months of the year
Talking about and describing family members.
Numbers and telling time
Talking about likes and dislikes
Hispanic culture
Major Assignments:
Oral and written exams every six weeks.
Students will work on a Hispanic country project they will present to the class.
Students will work on a Hispanic person project and will also present to the class.
Outside Requirements: All students enrolled in Spanish classes need to study the vocabulary nightly.

Spanish 2
Recommended Grade Level:9-12
Prerequisite: Spanish 1 or Placement Test
Course Description:
Spanish 2 will build upon concepts mastered in Spanish 1 including, but not limited to:
Present tense conjugation of regular, stem-changing and irregular "-ar", "-er" and "-ir" verbs
Vocabulary
Culture
Students will have the opportunity to visit and utilize a language lab with their classmates on a weekly basis to strengthen speaking abilities in Spanish.
Students will be engaged as active participants in the classroom while completing interactive assignments. Regular conversations in Spanish including group discussions and partner speaking practice will assist students as they become more fluent in their Spanish speaking abilities.

The most important grammatical focus for the Spanish 2 curriculum is describing past events through the successful mastery of the Preterit and Imperfect Tenses.
Other grammar concepts presented in the Spanish 2 curriculum include, but are not limited to:
- direct, indirect and double object pronouns
- reflexive verbs
- progressive tenses
- demonstrative adjectives and pronouns
- commands
● READING -Initially, students are expected to read and understand short, simple dialogues. As progress becomes
apparent, it will be reflected in the improvement of the reading skills of each student.
● SPEAKING -Communicative tasks will facilitate the new language acquisition. The tasks can be prepared,
personalized or an extemporaneous activity can be utilized.
● WRITING –The tasks at the beginning are structured and guided. As students become more proficient, they will
include brainstorming, drafts, and peer editing.
● LISTENING –In this task students receive information via audio, CD, TV, etc. and demonstrate effort in
understanding and processing what is being said.
Major Assignments:
Students will complete at least three of the following forms of assessment each six weeks:
Chapter Exam
Speaking Exam/Presentation in Spanish
Listening Exam
Reading Exam
Writing Exam
*One major project is assigned per semester
Outside Requirements:
- Students should be prepared to study current and past vocabulary words and grammar concepts on a nightly basis.
- Attendance of tutoring times may become necessary for those students requiring clarification of concepts not mastered during the scheduled class time.

Advanced Spanish 3
Course Description:
Spanish 3 and 3 Advanced will build upon concepts masters in Spanish 1 and 2.
Spanish 3 will get through 5 chapters and 3 Advanced will finish 7 chapters by the end of the school year.

Students will have the opportunity to visit and utilize a language lab with their classmates on a weekly basis to strengthen speaking abilities in Spanish.
Students will engage as active participants in the classroom while completing interactive assignments.
Daily conversations in Spanish including pair and group discussions will assist students as they become more fluent in their Spanish speaking abilities.

The most important grammatical focus for the Spanish 3 curriculum is describing the subjunctive.
Other grammar concepts presented include, but are not limited to:
READING: Students are expected to read short Spanish books out load in class. They are expected to be able to translate to the class and answer comprehension questions. Students will read 2 to 3 books during the duration of the school year.
WRITING: Students will be given a written prompt and they are expected to write 30 to 50 sentences without any notes by the end of the year.
LISTENING: In this, task students receive information via audio, CD, TV. Etc. and demonstrate efforts in understanding and processing what is being said.
MAJOR ASSIGNMENTS: Students will work on four different projects throughout the year where they will use their knowledge of writing and speaking. These projects will be presented to the class.
