Course Description: This is an introductory comprehensive laboratory course. It is designed to address a broad range of knowledge and skills related to personal development and management, promotion of strong families, and preparation for adult roles. Also known as Home Economics or Life Skills
Topics Covered: Content includes a focus on interpersonal skills; decision-making; promotion of family strengths and well being; developing positive relationships with peers; child development and care; and clothing selection and maintenance. Other studies address nutrition and dietary practices; food selection and preparation; budgeting and consumer-buying practices; and management of family housing needs. Influences of societal and technical changes, career options, and the management of multiple family, community, and wage-earner roles are included

Instructional Practices Education Training (IPET)Recommended Grade Level:10-12
Course Description: (2 credit course) This is a field-based internship that provides students with background knowledge of child and adolescent development as well as principles of effective teaching and training practices. Students work under the joint direction and supervision of both me as their teacher and an exemplary educator in the district in direct instructional roles with 1st – 8th grade students. Students learn to plan and direct individualized instruction and group activities, prepare instructional materials, develop materials for educational environments, assist with record keeping, and complete other responsibilities of teachers, trainers, paraprofessionals, or other educational personnel. Uniform Required – Need to buy a polo provided by teacher $15, and need to get appropriate slacks on your own. No artificial nails allowed. Child GuidanceRecommended Grade Level:11-12
Course Description: (2 credit course) The students in this class are provided opportunities to work with children at local elementary schools and day care centers. The students serve as teacher aides at the selected sites 2-3 days a week. In-class instruction involves studying about children's brain development , lesson preparation, and various field trips to highlight different occupations in the field of working with children. Uniform Required – Need to buy a polo provided by teacher $15, and need to get appropriate slacks on your own. No artificial nails allowed. Topics Covered: Shaken Baby, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, brain development, lessons planning for thematic units, types of child care, characteristics of a successful teacher, guidance and discipline, CPR certification, selecting toys and equipment, children's storytelling and literacy, prop box. NISD Volunteer Background Check will be required. |

Course Description: Practicum in Human Services provides background knowledge and occupation-specific training that focuses on the development of consumer services, early childhood development and services, and family and community-services careers. Content for Practicum in Human Services is designed to meet the occupational preparation needs and interests of students and should be based upon the knowledge and skills selected from two or more courses in a coherent sequence in the human services cluster.
