Course Description: We will explore, examine, and experience the sources and techniques psychologists use to gain insight into our own behavior,our relationships with others, and mental health issues. Knowledge of psychology can help build relationships, improve communication, build self-confidence, and enrich careers. Topics Covered: Units of study include: major psychological perspectives such as psychoanalysis, behaviorism and cognitivism to examine healthy development, learning and memory, sensory perception, theories of personality, and psychological testing. Major Assignments: Behaviorist project Altered states menu project Psychological Disorder movie project *Minimal outside time is required, but many students find that additional time is helpful on longer projects. Students should expect some use of on-line assignments and assessments. Students should largely be able to complete all work in class. |
SociologyRecommended Grade Level: 11-12
Course Description: Sociology studies human society and social behavior. Positive human relationships are an essential part of a civilized society and how we interact with each other is important so that we can find answers to questions and solve problems in our world. This course deals with the social atmosphere that helps to make us who we are and how we behave. Topics Covered: Sociology will cover topics such as culture, violence, deviance, social control, socialization and personality, group behavior, social class, and social institutions. Major Assignments: Research-Careers and Sociology Project-Societal Issues, Designing a study Project-Norms and Deviance *Minimal outside time is required, but many students find that additional time is helpful on longer projects.
