9-12 Course Description: Oral Interpretation is the love-child of Theatre Arts and Public Speaking. it incorporates students' love of the stage with competitive speaking. In Oral Interp, students choose various published works of literature (nonfiction, fiction, plays, etc.) in order to perform the text. The most successful students internalize the material through careful analysis and then direct and star in the live performances of their selected pieces. Students have the option to work alone or in pairs since there are multiple options for competition. The class environment is electric and fun! Topics Covered: Blocking Vocal exercises Literary analysis (ie characterization, theme, tone, mood, conflict, etc.) Spatial awareness Speech tournament etiquette Major Assignments: Students are assessed through objective unit exams as well as performances in a combination of events: Poetry Interpretation, Prose Interpretation, Humorous Interpretation, Dramatic Interpretation, Duo Interpretation, Duet Acting, Impromptu Speaking and Original Oratory. Extracurricular Requirements: Outside time is required for tournaments (mostly weekends) After school practices will be scheduled as needed There are annual program dues (please see a coach or counselor for more information on the cost) |
