Advanced Quantitative Reasoning (AQR)

Course Description: What you ever asked your math teacher “Why do I have to learn math?” Or have you ever asked yourself, “How is all this math stuff useful for me?” Well join us in AQR! In this class we will discover how mathematics plays a part of our everyday life. Together we will explore real world situation through group activities and projects to see how math truly is all around us. This course is best for students who in their continued education will not be required to take high level math courses, for example a student who is planning on majoring in English, Theater, Psychology,etc. This is also geared for students who prefer project based learning, working in groups, and presenting in front of others. Topics Covered: Semester I: Unit I: Estimating Large Numbers Unit II: Probability Unit II: Statistical Studies Unit Semester II: Unit IV Using Recursion in Models and Decision Making Unit V: Using Functions in Models and Decision Making Decision Making in Finance (Subject to change with new book adoption) Major Assignments: 1. Open Note Testing (2-3 Cycle) 2. Group and Individual Projects (1 each Cycle): Estimation Games and Mathematical Strategies Carnival Games and Probability Survey Design and Statistics Ferris Wheel's Around the World Hours of Daylight Around the World Buying A Car - Auto Loan Options (Subject to change with new book adoption) Daily homework is not assigned. Work done at home and any expenses is geared toward project creation. As much time and supplies are offered in class to reduce expenses and time needed for projects outside of class.
